CSUSB OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT
TIME LINE 1993 - 2003


Fall 1993 A Task Force on Quality Assurance is appointed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, its charge to examine CSUSB’s current efforts in quality assurance and develop a plan for campus-wide involvement in outcomes assessment activities.
 
Winter 1994 Task Force on Quality Assurance holds university-wide Outcomes Assessment Planning Meeting.

Task Force meets with College Deans, Department Chairs, and the University General Education committee to discuss the development of assessment plans and timelines for assessment activities.

Task Force meets with the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Task Force develops basic assessment guidelines and parameters for departments to follow.

Task Force holds Faculty Open Forum focused on the assessment of current practices, and format, criteria, and timelines for assessment plans.

Task Force develops format and defines content of program assessment plans based on faculty feedback.

Task Force on Quality Assurance completes its report on outcomes assessment at CSUSB.
 
Fall 1994 Task Force on Quality Assurance presents its report to the CSUSB Faculty Senate.

The Faculty Senate accepts the Task Force’s report and passes the “1994 Faculty Senate Resolution Concerning Outcomes Assessment” in which it resolves “to proceed in developing concepts of outcomes assessment as an important step for providing the effectiveness of our academic programs” (FSD 94-01).

The Faculty Senate appoints the University Outcomes Assessment Committee whose charge is to review and approve academic programs’ assessment plans and advance outcomes assessment at CSUSB.
 
Winter 1995 Academic programs begin the development of individual departmental plans and testing of a selected number of assessment techniques and methods through pilot projects.

Six members of the University Outcomes Assessment Committee attend a workshop held by the Association of American Colleges on Reforming and Assessing the Academic Major.
 
Spring 1995 The University Outcomes Assessment Committee begins the development of guidelines, format and approval criteria to assist programs in developing their assessment plans.
 
Fall 1995 The University Outcomes Assessment Committee establishes Procedures and Criteria for Review of programs’ mission, goals, and objectives.

Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the University Outcomes Assessment Committee (hereafter referred to as the UOAC).

The Dean Of Undergraduate Studies presents the Report of General Education Program Review Consultants to the UOAC, which begins discussion of the development of an assessment plan for the General Education Program.

The UOAC meets with Deans and Academic Affairs Council.

UAOC reviews CSUSB’s 5-year Program Self-study Review procedures and begins discussion of possible revision of it to incorporate outcomes assessment activities and data.

UAOC discusses its role in the strategic planning process and its relationship to the Planning Council’s Task Group on Assessment.

UAOC meets with the Academic Affairs Council to present its status report on Outcomes Assessment and proposes next steps in implementing assessment.
 
Winter 1996 Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.
 
Spring 1996 Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.
 
Fall 1996 UOAC develops an Assessment Handbook for faculty that includes guidelines for developing assessment plans, model assessment plans, and examples of the types of assessment methods and strategies used by programs at CSUSB.

UOAC forms subcommittee to examine 5-year Program Self-study Review documents and guidelines from other CSU campuses in order to consider ways to include outcomes assessment in CSUSB’s self-study document.

The Co-chair of the Strategic Planning Council's Task Group On Assessment meets with the UOAC to discuss how the two groups can interface effectively.

Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.
 
Winter 1997 CSUSB sends faculty and administration representatives to a conference on Outcomes Assessment at CSU Fullerton organized by the School of Business Administration

UOAC forms a Sub-Committee on Assessment of General Education.

Fall 1997 In conjunction with the Teaching Resource Center, the UOAC begins planning a campus-wide workshop/training session on assessment.

The Chancellor's Office provides funding to individual campuses to enable them to bring in outside consultants to advance assessment. Chancellor's Office funds CSUSB’s proposal.

UOAC develops a proposal for CSUSB participation in the Wharton/McKnight Institute’s Executive Education Training for helping campus leaders responsible for advancing the assessment of learning outcomes move from planning to implementation to be held April 13-17, 1998. Focus will be on student learning outcomes and how to develop a campus culture and focus on culture of evidence.

Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.
 
Winter 1998 UOAC holds university-wide assessment workshops focused on program assessment strategies and techniques, and the development of learning objectives.

Ten CSUSB faculty members participate in a CSU system-wide workshop on the Implications of the Cornerstone Planning Document for assessment and the development of objectives and methods of assessing basic skills areas of mathematics and written communication.

The Associate Vice President for Academic Programs meets with School Deans regarding the development of incentives, rewards, and consequences for assessment.

Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.
 
Spring 1998 CSUSB sends a faculty and administrator team to the Wharton Institute on Higher Education Management Workshop on Assessment at the University of Pennsylvania.

UOAC begins discussions on the use budget augmentation incentives to assist programs with approved assessment plans that are incurring implementation costs.

UOAC distributes the Chancellor's Office workbook on assessment to all departments. Workbook includes assessment plans of several CSUSB programs as examples of “Best Practices” in assessment.

UOAC distributes to the campus a progress report on CSUSB’s assessment activities, including an analysis of annual status reports submitted by departments/programs.

Winter 1999 College of Arts and Letters holds a three-day workshop on outcomes assessment at Kellogg West. Presenters: Edward White and Diane Halpern.

Spring 1999 CSUSB, in co-sponsorship with Cal Poly, Pomona and CSU Northridge is awarded a grant by the Chancellor's Office to hold a system-wide conference on Student Learning Outcomes Assessment in the English major.

Fall 1999 The administration appoints an Associate Vice President for Assessment and Planning to lead and coordinate the campus’ outcomes assessment activities.

The UOAC forms a sub-committee to develop and implement assessment methodology for general education. This committee is titled the University General Education Outcomes Assessment Committee.

CSUSB faculty team attends an outcomes assessment institute sponsored by The National Center on Postsecondary Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (NCTLA), held in San Diego.

Winter 2000 CSUSB faculty team attends the system-wide General Education Assessment Conference held at CSU Fullerton

The AVP for Assessment and Planning conducts an outcomes assessment workshop for the faculty of the College of the Education.

Spring 2000 The UOAC organizes a campus-wide workshop on outcomes assessment implementation. Presenters: Mary Allen and Richard Noel from CSU Bakersfield.

The University General Education Outcomes Assessment Committee begins the development and preliminary distribution of learning goals and objectives for the general education basic skills areas in written communication, oral communication, mathematics, and critical thinking. The committee consults with department chairs, the University General Education Committee, university and college curriculum Committees, College Outcomes Assessment Coordinators, and faculty who teach general education courses. The AVP for Assessment and Planning presents the committee’s report to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.

Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.
 
Fall 2000 The Teaching Resource Center sponsors a faculty team to attend the Teacher/Scholar Regional Workshop On Outcomes Assessment at Cal Poly, Pomona, entitled "Outcomes Assessment for Program Improvement."

The University General Education Outcomes Assessment Committee begins university-wide distribution of draft learning goals and objectives for the general education basic skills areas to the faculty for feedback and approval. It researches and selects a commercial assessment test to pilot.

The University General Education Outcomes Assessment Committee proposes a committee structure to develop goals and objectives for the GE Breadth areas in Arts and Letters, Natural Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.

Fall 2001
The University General Education Outcomes Assessment Committee pilots ETS’ Academic Profile in the General Education upper-division capstone courses. More than 1200 students participate in the pilot.
 
Spring 2001 The college deans appoint faculty to serve on the General Education Breadth area committees, which begin drafting learning goals and objectives for the breadth areas in Arts and Letters, Natural Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.
 
Summer 2001 The General Education Breadth Area Committees continue drafting learning goals and objectives for the breadth areas.

Fall 2001 The General Education Breadth Area Committees begin university-wide distribution of draft goals and objectives for faculty review and approval.

Winter 2002 The General Education Breadth Area Committees research and begin the development of assessment tools.

Spring 2002 The Teaching Resource Center hosts a critical thinking workshop on "Conceptualizing and Assessing Critical Thinking.” Presenter: Professor Robert Ennis from the University of Illinois.

The General Education Breadth Area Committees consult with faculty teaching the breadth area courses and begin developing embedded assessment tools to be piloted in GE courses.
 
Fall 2002 The General Education Breadth Area Committees pilot locally-developed embedded assessment questions in the final exams in general education courses in Arts and Letters, Natural Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Academic Programs submit their assessment plans for review and approval to the UOAC.
 
Winter 2003 The General Education Breadth Area Committees begin an analysis of data from the General Education Embedded Assessment Pilot Project conducted in Fall 2002
