Master of Arts in Teaching: Mathematics

Requirements (48 units)

The M.A. in Teaching: Mathematics is a unique program that addresses the needs of excellent secondary mathematics teachers. It provides an opportunity to deepen and expand your knowledge and understanding of mathematics as it pertains to the secondary curriculum, while expanding your ability to teach this curriculum effectively. With an MAT degree you are also well prepared for a career mentoring and guiding other secondary teachers.

In addition, this program provides a good foundation to earning a Ph.D. in mathematics education, as it addresses both the pedagogical aspects of the secondary curriculum and the mathematics involved.

A guiding principle of the MAT is that understanding mathematics and how to teach it should be closely connected. Thus the core mathematics courses blend mathematics along with pedagogy in every course, so that you are able to focus on pedagogy that is particularly relevant to the topics under discussion. In addition, we believe that a deep understanding is a crucial component of the ability to teach, and this understanding is developed and reinforced by a problem solving approach to the material.
