Student Research and Travel Fund

Available for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

The CSUSB Student Research and Travel (SRT) Program is a campus-wide grants program that encourages and supports undergraduate and graduate students to work with a faculty mentor on a research or other creative project.  Students who engage in research learn through inquiry and experience with an intensity and depth not likely encountered in the classroom.  The SRT Program is funded by Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) and Instructionally Related Programs (IRP), and administered by the Office of Graduate Studies.

The Definition of Research
The SRT Program defines research very broadly.  Research includes any scholarly inquiry or investigation or artistic activity that leads to the production of original knowledge; to increased problem solving capabilities, including design and analysis; to original critical or historical theory and interpretation; or to the production of art or artistic performance.

Information for students applying for research and travel funds from the SRT fund:

ASI and IRP has made funding available to support research and travel related to academic growth and development. Applicants must submit an original and eight copies of the entire application and supporting documentation, for a total of nine application packets.

These guidelines are not to be interpreted as policies. This list reflects the criteria used by the committee in the past to divide limited funding among large numbers of qualified student requests. If a student feels justified in requesting funds for expenses typically not funded by the committee, the student's argument for funding should be presented and defended in the proposal.

  1. We assume that students plan to do the research and travel for which they are asking support whether they receive any help or not. We want to assist them as much as possible.
  2. Requests should be for research or travel related to an academic course, i.e., research for an independent study course or honor's project.
  3. There are no guarantees that any request or project will be funded, whether it has a history of previous support or not.
  4. The committee has a $1,000 funding limit for each proposal, unless they unanimously agree to go over that limit. Most requests do not receive full funding.
  5. All applicants must include a CSUSB faculty letter of recommendation.
  6. One application per person. If you worked on a project with another person you each must fill out a separate application.

The application to be turned into the committee begins on page 1 (shown on the bottom center of each application page). The application is to remain in that order. Deviation from this format makes the application incomplete and in turn will not be submitted to the committee for review. Any information required for the application not attached will make the application incomplete and will not be submitted to the committee for review.

Applications are available in the following locations:

The ASI Office (SU-144)
The Office of Graduate Studies (AD-127)
The Office of Undergraduate Studies (UH-368)
